Yeah the bracing thing is the problem. I don't know exactly what kind of bracing it needs to be. I actually have one of those Loar guitars, and the only reason it didn't work out is because the fingerboard is too high off the body, so the pickup can't get close enough. I need something where the fingerboard is pretty close to the body. An Eastman won't work either for the same reason.
As for an L-50, I find it hard to cough up around $1k for a guitar I'm going to cannibalize. We'll see what happens. Right now I'm hating my electric tone, and the best sound I've ever gotten was with Ted's (yours originally I believe) ES-150 repro. I need to get something going -I've been pretty uninspired because my tone is not where I want it.
Three guitars: Crafters of Tennessee Mahogany Studio (inspired by pre-war Gibson), Miguel Angel Lopez (a Granada builder) Sycamore Flamenco and a Cordoba D-5.
Three ukuleles: A Kamaka Koa Tenor, National Resophonic Concert Steel and a custom Kepasa Little Mac Maple and Red Spruce concert.
I'd like to upgrade the Cordoba or replace it with a nylon string Maccaferri style.
I also think about a 12 fret resonator guitar, if it was good enough for Oscar Aleman than may be a sign. If you live in an apartment there are space issues.
A guitar for all occasions...
A Dupont
A Dobro
A cheaper resonator, for festivals/beach/holidays
A Steel string acoustic (with pickup)
A Steel string acoustic (without pickup)
A 12 string steel string acoustic
A Cheap nylon string acoustic
A Les Paul
A Strat
A 335
A Charvel pointy head stoked monstrosity straight out of 1986 (my first, i can't part with it)
And my precious Bill Asher Dual tone Weissenborn thingy
& the odd Mandolin, Balalaika, Baglama, & Bass lying around the place.
ALL essential i tell ya.
All i need now is a L-5, Tele, Gretch, & a ES175, D hole Mac,........
Right now;
-Gitane 255
-3 Telecasters
-Danelectro 6 string Bass
-Late 50's Harmony Lap Steel
-mandolin
-Violin
-Tenor banjo
I had to sell off a bunch of guitars this fall , took a bath but needed the $$$; Ash Telecaster,Larrivee L-05,60's ri Stratocaster,Garrison mandola, a Banjo a bunch of pedals, ect.
I only pine for the Larrivee!!!
Wish List;
-Robin Ranger
-6 string Banjo
- a nice Nylon String
-Goldtone 6-String Mandolin
- danelectro Electric 12 string.
......boy, it's never enough is it??
Three in the house, but I only play (and own) two.
Something about having only a few solid guitars simplifies my attitude about making music. I once had half a dozen guitars, including a Les Paul, PRS, Strat, Taylor twelve string, and a second selmac. I sold them all off years ago and am happy to have a lean collection now.
play continually:
-1997 Dupont MD30 (original owner...)
-Godin Park Avenue with Ken Armstrong Handmade humbucker (wow! all this for about $700 is just unbelievable-if you are interested in getting one, if anyone is wondering about these guitars, I can help you think it through; I am so pleased with mine)
never play:
Martin Custom Shop (similar to the Eric Clapton model)
this is actually not even mine, it is my father's; he just doesn't play it. It is a good example of this type of guitar, but I don't like the lack of clearance against the soundboard. Anyway, my Godin now supplies the more resonant sound I occasionally liked the Martin for.
I only need two more guitars:
-either a Favino-style or Busato-style selmac Actually, if I can trace the Vielle Reserve I played last summer in Tokyo, I will buy it. $9k, and the most responsive guitar I have played in my life. I played two VR's side by side and the difference was unforgettable. #113, folks: if you find it, buy it. I have a picuture of it, in case I ever need to identify it!
-a carved top archtop w/o pickup
and maybe, when I am older (I am newly 40)
a nylon string Bossa style guitar.
I have a new motto: "one woman, many guitars". Here's my current list (of guitars!):
Martin D-35, 1976, shaded top:semi retired, I will never sell this.
Taylor 410KCE, 1999: my workhorse flattop for ten years.
Eastman El Rey 2, 2007: my current workhorse
Gitane DG 300JJ, 2008: my newest passion
handmade Weissenborn style: Bill Hins 2005
Gold Tone lap steel
Fender Telecaster Thinline 1968 RI, late 90's
Telecaster Highway One special issue, 2007
Little Martin travel guitar
Lyon and Healy Mandolin, 1928
Lanakai Tenor Uke
Michael Kelly acoustic fretless bass
up until my 40th B-day, the Martin was my only guitar.
I traded or sold another 10 or 15 guitars, including two resonators, a Strat, Ibanez and Epiphone archtops, a lap steel, DeArmond, Hagstrom, Godin nylon string, and Brian Moore synth guitar. I find that I get attached to some guitars or sounds, and others don't trip my trigger after a while. FYI my wife and I will celebrate our 30 anniversary this year.

I'm guessing? You can NEVER have too many!

Q: "How many guitars does a guitar player need"
A: "Just one more"
My current stock: 5 total but I basically only play two of these all the time.
1 JP Favino
1 Gibson L5
What else does one need?
Well for fun though barely played:
1 Gitane D500 (early matte finish version)
1 Prudencio Saez classical guitar
1 Cheap Fender dreadnought
Live life and play music like it's your last day on earth. One day you'll be right- Russel Malone
Indeed... perhaps there needs to be 2 polls/posts!

I'm tellin' ya, Ian, "Minor Swing" on the Dano 6SB will change your life! Actually, just about any GJ tune on a 6SB is impressive. And what a sound!
