Cigano. help please

Hello,

first of all i apologize, I know that the beginner gj guitars have been discussed again and again, but i think that my question might be a bit different.

I am a classically trained violinist, broke college student, very beginner gypsy jazz guitarist, in fact very beginner at guitar at all. I am focusing on rhythm at the moment but i would certainly like to work on lead as well.

I have pretty well settled on getting a Cigano Gj-10 or 15. My question is: for my level and prior musical experience, which would be more enjoyable/easier/appropriate to play?

any help would be wonderful,
thank you,
Ian

The Cigano GJ15 will be somewhat easier to play than the GJ10, due to the shorter scale length on the 15. The difference is string tension, like the difference between a 3/4 size violin and a 4/4/ size violin, strung up with the same gauge strings (maybe not as drastic). The 3/4 violin would be easier at that tuning due to the shorter scale length, right?

The GJ15 also tends to have a rounder sound, which is great when playing alone or in a duo. If you are playing with 3-4+ other guitars, the longer scale GJ15 will have a little more "cut."

BTW, the Cigano is an amazing instrument, even at 3x the price point.

Did you mean longer scale "GJ-10"?

    Thank you so much.

The 3/4 violin thing kinda confused me because, in classical at least, you almost never see anyone but children playing anything but a full size but i think i know what you mean. If i am correct, playing a gj-10 would almost be like playing a viola strung with violin strings and tuned like a violin?

I guess that is almost exactly what you said, but with different examples.

In any case, all i meant was THANK YOU. That will make the decision easier, as i was really on the fence about which one to buy.

you shouldn't compare viola / violin, and long scale, short scale guitar... it really doesn't work that way...

The difference in feel is not as big viola/violin... in fact it's very minimal

i like the oval hole guitar better because it sounds better ... All the D hole ciganos i've tried have a much cheaper sound compared to the oval hole...

I find the oval hole more versatile too with hte extra frets...

    /my opinion

After doing a bit more research, i have found that people have soooo many good things to say about the oval hole cigano, and fewer about the d hole. I think that the oval hole might be the guitar for me. hearing that the long scale isnt the difference between night and day is helpful.

*plus the oval hole guitars are just so damned attractive.

    Thank you all very much
