Hello all, I was not able to copy and paste the address but,.....
If you go to YouTube and enter "Bireli Lagrene Shreds" you will see our hero in a much different light ( fear not, he's still the boss!!)
By the way, this is NOT the same stuff as the Clapton Shreds, Kiss Shreds, etc. that have been posted on YouTube (although, do yourself a fvor and check out both of those as well!)
Enjoy!!
I think, therefore I am......I think.

    Hey Cap,

What's the story on the Upton festival? I've got an old tape of those, and every time I watch it feels like Angelo is in a school gym. Where were those gigs?

    thanks,
    Jack.

    Hi Jack,
Actually, i wasn't at that Angelo DeBarre gig. It was filmed by a mate of mine who has sadly since died, so i don't really know anything about the actual venue itself.
You have it do you? These tapes sure get around a bit don't they!
Did you get it via the late Dave Hodson?

Somebody sent me once the names of the players with Angelo, but I cannot find this anymore... Be glad to know more about this gig!

The backing group is British group 'Le Jazz'. Including as stated: Christian Garrick on violin, & Dave Kelbie on rythm guitar.
I don't know who the bass player is, but almost certain that it's not Andy Crowdy, despite the glasses & beard.

I think it was either Phil in Oregon (by way of the UK) or Wayne in Toronto--more likely Wayne. Either way, I haven't watched it in ages, but it's all great stuff, and having it at the touch of a button is just great! I'll probably be watching a lot more thanks to you.

So now that you've done us all such a favor, are you planning to disappear for another few years?!?

    best,
    Jack.

    Hopefully not! :D

It's funny to think those tapes have made it thousands of miles away, since i have what i believe to be the original first generation VHS.
The Youtube thing came about when i had cause to move a lotta stuff which had been packed away in boxes for years.
I came across all my old tapes, & i thought, i really must get the best of these transferred to disc. Putting 'em on YouTube was the next logical progression. It was time consuming, but a labour of love. :D
Actually i do have more stuff, but as i mentioned somewhere on the Hot Club UK forum, the quality is not so good, as a lot of it is obviously 3rd or 4th (or worse!) generation video copies.
By the time they're on YouTube the quality has decreased a lot even on the first generation stuff, so i think the quality on the remaining stuff i've got would be pretty bad, both sound wise & visually.

I did make an exception for the odd rarities like the 3 Bireli vids of which this is one:

Mostly because i'd seen a much worse looking copy on YouTube already, & also just because it's Bireli, & to me he is the greatest guitarist on the planet. 8)
I do have the rest of his fusion set from which the 'Bireli Shreds' video is the final number. I might put the rest of that up, because it's about the best quality of the stuff i've got left, & folk have requested more via YouTube, so i may try to find time to do that next week.
    Best,
    Wayne.

The Upton Jazz Festival tends to concentrate on Traditional Jazz; lots of grey beards, polo neck arran sweaters and sandals about.

The Angelo gig was indeed in a school hall although I can't remember what the school was called. The bass player was Tony Bevir who I believe has since died and the other rhythm guitarist was Pete Finch.

Angelo came over at the last minute because Jimmy Rosenberg pulled out. He met the group for the first time the night before and on most of the tunes, it was the first time they had played them together. It was clear with several of the intros that since the group could not speak French they hadn't a clue what he was going to play until the tune actually started. Dave Kelbie was really impressive here in picking it up immediately and it was often a few bars before the rest recognised it.
