poor man's gig book - redux

Hello All,

Thanks for your feed back on the gig book. I'm trying to take it out of its prototype phase and make a really nice version that is directly printed onto high quality card stock and cut to size (right now, it's printed out on paper, cut out, and glued to index cards). I called around, and the only way it is cost effective is to have large quantities of material, so I am thinking of expanding the number of songs to 99 or so, and making multiple sets, if anyone is interested. Here is the list of songs I currently have. If you are so inclined, please add suggestions to expand the list:

After You've Gone
Anniversary Song
All of Me
Artillerie Lourde
Avalon
Belleville
Billets Doux
Blue Drag
Blues Claire
Blues for Ike
Bossa Dorado
Christmas Swing (Swingin' with Django)
Coquette
Daphne
Dark Eyes
Dinah
Dinette
Django's Tiger
Djangology
Douce Ambience
Exactly Like You
For Sephora
H.C.Q. Strut
Honeysuckle Rose
How High the Moon
Hungaria
I Can't Give You Anything but Love
I Wonder Where My Baby is Tonight
I'll See You in My Dreams
I've Found a New Baby
It Don't Mean a Thing
It Had to be You
J'Attendrai
Lady Be Good
Limehouse Blues
Manoir des mes Reves (Django's Castle)
Menilmontant
Micro
Minor Swing
Montmartre
My Melancholy Baby
Night and Day
Nuages
On the Sunny Side of the Street
Oriental Shuffle
Out of Nowhere
R-Vignt Six
Rose Room
September Song
Shine
Some of these Days
Song d'Automne
Stompin' at the Decca
Sweet Georgia Brown
Sweet Sue
Swing 39
Swing 42
Swing 48
Swing Gitan
There Them Eyes
Topsy
Troublant Bolero
Twelfth Year
Undecided
Viper's Dream

Again, any suggestions for additions (or anything you would take out because nobody ever plays it) would be appreciated. Also, if you would be interested in a copy, let me know.

Thanks!

Wow. What a great list! Thanks so much. I was thinking of shooting for 120 songs (55 more than I have right now), so this is perfect. Other suggestions anyone? I'm way less familiar with any post-Django songs (e.g. Bossa Dorado), so any ideas there would be hugely helpful.

Well, altogether not a poor man's gig book. Maybe "Basic" and "Deluxe" versions? Print on 5"x8" instead of 3"x 5"? Print on both sides of card stock and last but not least, check for copyright infringements?

Yeah. I'm torn between comprehensive scope and usability. One of the driving factors is that it doesn't make much monetary sense to get everything printed and cut unless there are a bunch of pages. So that either means a huge amount of songs or multiple copies. If a few people are interested in copies, it would be pretty inexpensive (especially compared to the cost of other gig books). Any takers?

You should make a iPod version that is just a directory full of the images that you can copy to a large screen hand held phone or to a eReader.

That's a good idea, too. Although there is something about the feel of paper in my hands that I always really like. That's just me, though...

I just bough the iReal Book application - it is available for both iPhones and open source Android phones (what I have).

It is pretty sweet - has over 300 tunes and cost just under $8. It means I always have these changes with me... And most importantly, it will let you transpose any tune on the fly!

Sadly, it doesn't have a lot in the way of Jazz Manouche, it is much more straight ahead, but still, I play a lot of dixieland and swing too, so it works well for me :)

Wow - I hadn't even thought about the intellectual property law surrounding this. I'm not too worried about it, since I'm not looking to start a business or anything like that. It is a good question, though. Does anyone know about the ownership of the rights to these songs? Are they in the public domain?

Look again: open the app, look in the forum under Jazz, then Gypsy Jazz. There are a couple of playlists with 300 tunes included...
