The story I got from WICA is that his doctor told him he couldn't play for two months. :? :? :?
Where does all this stuff come from. Makes em wonder what really is going on. I understand Stochelo not coming as the Trio are now playing in Moscow. What I don't quite understand is why they didn't book the trio ... money perhpas? who knows.
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed
With the Rosenbergs it was a schedule miscommunication, plain and simple. I was speaking with Ivan a few days ago. He said they love Djangofest and they feel bad about the mixup but if you want to see them again - just let Nick know and they'll be happy to come back.
I don't know Angelo well, but he seems like a nice guy and I do know this, it's been a crazy year for all these guys. Mathieu, Rocky, Romane, Angelo, Boulou, Elois & David have been racking up the frequent-flyer miles with this Django 100 concert series all over the world in addition to the two or three groups each of them plays with and I know at least three of them are recording albums in addition to all of this. With Django's birthday year, these musicians are running flat-out and doing probably twice the number of concerts they regularly do. I feel for them... haha... it's been a crazy year for me as well and I'm basically in "hide from the world and get work done" mode... this is the first time I've been on Djangobooks in months. Suffice it to say, a lot of big promoters are competing for these acts in the "Django Birth" year... and these big promoters have the manpower and money to compete very effectively with wonderful little homegrown festivals like our Djangofest. They book way in advance because they have ready money to slap down as compared to festivals like Djangofest where Nick is raising this money as he goes by selling tickets and maybe getting a few hundred in sponsorship from guys like me. That's part of what this whole sponsorship & early tickets thing is all about - getting more money early to be able to confirm acts who book way in advance.
So if I had to guess, I would say that Nick has been working to fill a great schedule in a very tight market. It'll be cool though - the schedule as it is for this year is a "who's who" of guys who have given some of the most memorable concerts at Djangofest. Robin's return concert after the broken hand which brought a double standing ovation, Samson's "standing room only" concert (the US customs officials held him up at the airport and instead of leaving, the audience not only stayed but grew in size with people lining the sides of the entry ways... at any rate, Samson finally shows up looking like someone who has spent 22 hours on a plane and 3 hours getting questioned by the TSA-Gestapo... but he grabs a guitar... drinks a full bottle of water in one gulp, asks for another bottle of water...drinks half of it... then pounds out the most amazing show.) The introduction of both Gonzalo Bergara and Alfonso Ponticelli happened in '04 & '05 I think ... both shows left people gaping. I remember someone coming up to me in the hall after Gonzalo's first show, saying: J* C*!... some kid with a ponytail just blew the doors off the auditorium - no one knew who he was, but they do now!! haha... and of course John Jorgenson with his keen eye for talent recruited Gonzalo whose solo career has really blossomed in these last couple of years. Mathieu wrote from Brisbane a few days ago and said he's sorry he can't be at Djangofest this year because he loves this festival, but he'll definitely be back in future years - and knowing him - he'll introduce us to yet another amazing young player who is coming up in the French jazz scene.
So, onward fellow jammers... I think it'll be a good year. I plan to get a few blisters. But for now, it's back to the bench for me. Back to hibernation.
You get one chance to enjoy this day, but if you're doing it right, that's enough.
Last week on that page they were promising "guests" to replace Angelo and Stochelo - but don't see any mention of that now. The guitar masterclasses at $75 each have also disappeared (I am signed up for both and can hopefully use that money for other workshops). Its still a very good lineup - but disappointing that those two aren't there.

They haven't updated the DFNW website yet - Angelo is still listed.
So who will they come up with?
