Dupont or Eimer...

Hi everyone,

I need your opinion. My friend want a good gypsy guitar. Now he got a Gallato Angelo Debarre model and is not satisfied with it. The sustain isn't very well and had a lot of buzzing problems. Budget for the guitar is about 3000 euro. It's a lot of money so can afford cheaper Dupont or Eimer. Guitar should be definitely oval hole. I know this question may not have answer but what guitar would you recommend? How they sound like, maybe someone has both(should be very happy :) and can compare them?
Or maybe there are other good quality gypsy guitars available in Europe?

I suppose I'm the happy one, having them both! :D They're both great guitars but I'm not sure you can compare them. Veeery different horses! Anyway there are so many fantastic guitars you can buy with 3000 euro in Europe. I would seriously consider Maruejouls'... his oval hole models are outstanding, particularly the maple ones IMO.

Wow thanks for the idea, checked it, looks fabulous, I should wrote an email on price details and pickup system

I know that it's the best to try out guitar, match instrument with player but in Poland it's totally impossible... I'm trying to get as much information as possible via net to get the general idea what is the character of particular luthiers instruments. What are they pros and cons... Any suggestions will be really appreciated...

AJL builds exceptional guitars in that price range:

    Definitely worth considering.

    Also Geronimo Mateos of Spain:

Dupont or Eimers.. a subjective question for which there is no right or wrong answer. Example being frater who owns both an recommended a third, and he has a very good point, Godfrey's guitars sound fantastic.

Purely soundwise, my ear would prefer the Eimers because of its mid range which is great for bluesy bebop manouche and has a full sound. If I preferred cutting lead lines ala Django the Dupont would be the girl for me.

Also bloody hard to quantify due to model differences etc but I like Eimers for its all round tone however nothing cuts like a broken in Dupont.
One thing that sold me on Mr. Eimers also is, he guarantee's his guitars for life. unlike other GJ luthiers who do for 2 yrs. Leo Eimers basically says as long as you didn't drop your guitar down the stairs it is guaranteed as long as I live.
That shows dedication and pride, and that is not a guarantee you will get from Dupont.

... as do all the guys in Les Doigts de L'homme. I never got around to trying their Marins out at Django in June this year, but got to hear them up close, and they were very impressive, some of the best I've heard.

Philippe man, For 3000€ your friend can pick up a nice guitar! Check out http://www.guitare-village.com/neuf.php and click the names under Les Luthiers. If you open this in google Chrome you can translate the pages.

I know Poland is out there and not exactly driving distance to Amsterdam or Paris but your friend may want to consider jumping on a cheap flight to Paris or Amsterdam for a weekend to play guitars - fly back with something which feels and sounds 'right'. Round trips from Warszawa to Paris are around 250€, Amsterdam 160€. The experience would be fantastic.

How much do Marins cost, anyway? I don't see any pricing info on his Website.

Some years ago I had the chance to buy a practically new Marin for about 1.900 euro but I was stupid enough to pass (the shape of the guitar turned me a bit out!). Oh, and about Les Doigts de L'homme, Kikteff also owns a Maruejouls bought in London few months ago...
