That's the stuff nightmares are made of... The best solution I've found so far is to get a Nomade.
Take it up to the gate with the intention of carrying it onboard and if you get a bitch of an attendant that absolutely refuses to let you in just:
Send the empty case under the plane
Loosen the strings
Put on a capo
Take the loop-ends off the tailpiece and...
Detach the neck!!
It will fit into a cabin-approved sized bag with some padding or you can make a custom case out of a backpack, beforehand.
When you get to your destination just repeat the process in reverse, tune up and you're good to go. It's the only way to be really safe plus Nomades sound and play great and are more than adequate for festivals or gigs.
You'll get to sleep and have sweet dreams of playing with Stochelo instead of the possibly turned-true nightmare we can all suffer from when traveling with our guitars.
