I don't doubt Kenny's credentials... I don't doubt his integrity
For someone who was recently such a stickler about the meaning of the word "instinctive" you play pretty fast and loose with the long and well established meaning of "confidence man".
Fair enough Kevin.
I do think that Kenny IS selling confidence and I suspect that if you are familiar with his work you would agree to some extent. I do not think that that observation is necessarily in conflict with his credentials as a working musician.
On the thread you allude to I restrained myself from to rising to the bait with the homophobic anecdote related there. Now that a few days have passed I see that I have a different view of what it is and isn't appropriate provocation on a forum judging by what people are prepared to complain about.
I find myself completely at ease with that.
I have gigged with a motivational speaker, I found him charming and engaging personally and he dealt with me very fairly. Surprisingly enough he also seemed pretty sincere about the worth of his product. I wouldn't pay to listen to him though.
I should make it clear though that I do not believe that just something can be sold means that it should be encouraged. Be that a good story, a flawed truism, mock outrage, LED's, SuperPicks or SUV's or padded bicycle seats.
This is not an immoral position nor is it easy, but there you go that's me I'm incorrigible.
This kind of gets into the whole practice regimen thing. If one does the exercises, comping, arps, licks, melodies, improv all in one day that could easily eat up a full day.
To me you two guys, Jay and Dave, sound closer to be on the same page than what you might think. At least the way I remember it from Kenny's book he wasn't propagating a parrot style repeating the same thing over and over. Rather stressing the importance of focusing on a single achievement but dissecting it from every angle possible to soak up and internalize the material.
@Bones ......when I am building muscle strenghth I push til I feel the muscle burn then stop, relax for a few minutes, then push til it burns again. Then relax and move on to something completely different. When I first started really high speed rhythm (north of 240) at first I couldn't make it through 2 choruses. I am up to about 5 minutes now. And after a break I can go another 5 but then I have to slow it down for a long time. I also gave myself permission to be sloppy when I started to fatigue. Once I stopped after a rest I do it slowly really focussed on clean and correct then again say to myself, now I am building muscle not technique.
I think it important when trying to build muscle strength to listen carefully to the feedback your body gives. Don't give in at the first sign of discomfort but don't push so hard you do damage.
The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed

And pleased to meet you.
Anyway must go, windmills to slay. You will have to be a little bit patient with me as there will probably be quite a lot of that.
