I might add that I still think that some kind of good system can be developed to share these recordings so Jack and others won't have to spend several afternoons a week mailing things out. I would like to participate.

I have the tracks that were omitted from the CD of "Tziganskaia" and I would like to put these up on the directory. Can someone email me and give me a clue or two how to do this?

I’m not a “collector” – more like a disorganized custodian or steward. I never said no to anyone who asked me for a recording. The most I ever did was add a caveat to please sit on something for a spell until it’s barter value could be fully exploited. Whatever the idealists think, for now these old recordings have value, and it’s foolish to pretend it’s not so.
I agree with that. I have masses of stuff I have obtained over the years but I have only done so in order to listen to it, not hoard it. Often, having listened once, I never listen again to items I have been trying to find for years. I have always been only too pleased to share what I have with anyone who is interested although my filing is so shambolic, locating a particular item can prove very difficult.

However, on occasions, unconditional sharing is not practical for the reasons Scot and Ted have given.

As an example, I had a copy of the complete recording of Django's Mass for many, many years before it was officially released but the collector who gave it to me insisted that I should not pass it on unless I could obtained something in return that he felt was acceptable. I never could. However, I was subsequently sent another copy (I think it came from Scot actually) and the conditions under which I could use this material changed.

In all honesty, the process gets a bit wearing after a while. :( Having said that, if anyone has any previously unreleased film footage of Django, I've got some great stuff to trade.

I think it was Scot that told me that he thought Sascha Distel had a lot of footage of Django that he would never release. Has anybody heard about this since Distel died???

There was a guy in Holland I knew who was convinced that Distel had several other reels of Django footage similar to the J'Attendrai clip. Over the years he had written Distel begging him to make them public....no luck.

Who knows if it's true...every genre needs a good conspiracy theory!

There are many stories about unreleased Django film clips. Some of them quite bizarre. There is apparently a guy in Wales who has footage he obtained in the war. Colin Cosimini insists he has seen film of Django wandering about in a white dinner jacket and I am forever being told something really exciting is about to emerge. I tend to treat all these stories with considerable scepticism although I am sure there is something "new" somewhere if it could only be located or prised lose.

Then, of course, there are the reels of tape recordings Django made on his own tape machine rotting away in an attic somewhere in the UK which must be kept hidden for fear of the gypsy curse Naguine placed on anyone who released them to the general public.

Hey Scot,

if you are using Windows, all you need to do is type this URL into the address bar of your browser:

ftp://ftp.sugarinthegourd.com

then right click and select "login as..."

enter the username (gjshare@sugarinthegourd.com)
and the password (the nickname of the Parisian nightclub owner with the red hair)

you will then see all of the folders which are on the site, just as if you were browsing on your computer. You can then simply paste files onto this screen.

BTW Ted is Bamboula's Me am Kolle Morsch cool to post?

I've heard something similar. Only time will tell. It's hell getting any sense out of Fremeaux.

Man what an interesting thread!
I first have to say thank you to all the folks who shared this stuff and
did so so thoughtfully.

I also have to say that in other parts of my life I have been what you would call a collector and still am sometimes, though I don't get up in the morning worrying about it any more.

I guess if I was to describe my collecting habits I would say I was only interested in finding the records themselves, not that the music wasn't important but having a tape of the original never jazzed me like finding the real deal.

That being said I can see from a couple of peoples posts that for them
this stuff in what ever form is akin to real currency and can be used as such and after thinking about it I can more or less see their point. Especially if it is music that has been taped in the field.

It seems like the folks writing here are more often than not inclined to share maybe not until it suits them but sooner or later and I thank them for that.

After saying all that (very slowly I'm a crummy typist)
I felt a little funny downloading stuff from people who are still with us
and for whatever reason haven't re-released their commercial recordings.
I am wondering what other people think about that.
As far as this conversation goes It seems like a gorilla in the room to me.

I'm not judging I would have to convict myself first.
Thanks
Tom
