I've installed JDK 8 but still no dice. The program appears to open, but then closes again immediately. Several other people on the user reviews / download page are reporting the same issue of the program not opening on mac:

If you run it on Mac with no problems, it might be that you are still back on a very old version of macOS? I'm on High Sierra here.

I had this issue but JDK solved it. Ill check my version tomorrow but I m pretty sure it is Sierra too (I just bought the imac before I was on PC)

Did you re install TuxGuitar after installing JDK? I am not sure but it might change. I just know that this trick worked for me and other people on the french forum without doing any crazy code changes

Solved: it was old version of tux guitar causing issue. The one on first google result is bad:

^ This is v1.2 and doesn't work on recent macOS.

The third google result is a sourceforge link to a v1.4, and that one does work:
