Here's the answer I received from Fapy via the Gypsy Jazz Academy:
Eddy,
I am playing on my Samick archtop. It is a copy of the Gibson style guitars and I have had it for about 8 years. I don't often play electric but I bought this guitar for playing gigs which need the Django electric sound.
I don't do anything different in terms of playing or set up and I still use my Gallien Kruger amp for these gigs. I do find that the sound of the electric guitar makes me play more modern solos and chords.
I don't try to recreate Django's sound but a gypsy player on an electric will always sound a bit like Django's later recordings.
I like those old Waso recordings, but I think Koen really brings a neat flavor to any project he worksz on. There is a good free download of Koen playing with the Rosenberg Trio on their site www.rosenbergtrio.com
Fapy is amazing, but I'm just barely scratching the surface of his work. I watched a few of his videos at Gypsy Jazz Academy over the weekend. What WOULD Fapy do? (He would have grabbed one of those wristbands at DFNW when he had the chance, unlike myself)
Is there any reason to believe Fapy will come to the US anytime soon? I haven't read anything about his touring information besides that he will be making a "rare appearance in the UK this summer" (http://www.lejazzetal.com/web/content/index.php).
As far as coming to the US, I think that answer may be never.... Fapy doesn't like to fly at all, and I when I talked to him about the US, he didn't seem interested in visiting or going to perform. You've got to come to Europe to see him in person.
Fapy will be on tour in the UK in July...I just got tickets for his show in Hull on July 25th; will be a treat to see him again as not seen him since 2003 L'espirit Manouche. Here's the tour date info:
The 4 Waso albums are the best he ever recorded. the combination of Koen de Cauter en Fapy Lafertin is fantastic. The ambiance is so warm on these recordings you can hardly find that today anymore. Get those records if you can! On one of them he plays this brilliant valse de bamboula about 1/10 of the speed of how it is mostly played today

Hope this answers your question

Agreed. I'd love to have a Waso box set.
