Interesting that there's been not one response to this email, about the DFNW line up, the premier GJ festival in the US, that I posted almost a week ago...I know we're all busy with work & playing and all that exciting stuff, but would've expected some excited comments like "Wow!" from the Americans and "Brilliant!" from the British contingent! :D

    ....WOW! What a lineup!
....I can see about four shows I can allocate appreciating gold and silver PMs to attend!
....Much looking forward to the jam sessions this year as well!
....I think the weather this Sept for DFNW will be excellent as usually happens when the month of June is crap as Mark Twain ( author of Tom Sawyer) is reported too have said, "The mildest winter I ever spent was one summer on Puget Sound".
    ....I can dig it!

Hello, All. I have a question - this September being my first Djangofest! I have played classical and folk for a number of years, but have only picked up manouche/gypsy since January. How can I assess whether I have the ability/chops to attend the various workshops at DFNW? I would really like to attend about 7 (!) since I coming down from Canada. I don't mind being out of my league while I'm there - I'll learn something by diffusion! - but I don't want to hold the workshops up if my left hand or my theory is a little slow...

    Rush slowly.

I've gone to 2 years of the Djangofest now, and attended 4 separate workshops. I can state unequivocally that I don't have the chops to play with any of the people in the workshops.

I do however have enough money to pay for 2 workshops every year  , and so I do. Every workshop has brought me closer to actually being able to play better, and that's all I expect.

    I've done workshops with:

Denis Chang - he wants you to play, and is very supportive when you do. I passed when it was my turn to play the first time around, but after that went for it each time. I could feel my skills getting better each time, probably from desperation. I was the only one with an old Fender Dreadnaught.

Sebastien Giniaux - He was the same, and wanted us to play samples of what he was demonstrating to us. It was more challenging in that group, because there were some real virtuosos playing. I tried, though.

Stephane Wrembel - He only used 1 or 2 people in the class, and mainly demonstrated practice techniques, with them as the models. My guitar just sat on my lap the whole time.

Gonzalo Bergara - same thing as Stephane. He showed technique, and talked about understanding scales in every key, etc. We didn't really do any playing.

So...if you're a noobie like me, yes, you CAN take part and get a lot out of the workshops. And no, you won't take time away from others. :)

From one Canuck to another...it's worth every cent, if only for the exposure.

Maybe we can get Michael or Denis to post something on this forum about what they expect of a participant during workshops. I think that would be good for me..

The Magic really starts to happen when you can play it with your eyes closed

whats the best lodging option (this point in the game) if I want to come out with my wife and two young kids? I love good campfire jamming but I am not sure how much of that goes on.
