I'm not sure what specifically you're pointing to but I agree with what you say.
When I play I mostly rely on what I hear at the time and what I hear in my mind coming up. Even if I wanted to think while I'm playing I just don't have that skill, although I've been trying to do it while practicing for the past year and it's becoming better but far from good.
I have a DVD of Joe Pass and there is an interview there where this guy asks what's he thinking about while he's playing and he says: "you don't think man, you just play man".
That's my ideal.

I misunderstood what your meaning was in how to attack the strings....then after rereading....that was a practice thing....not a playing thing
