I'm using a Baggs Venue now and I love it. It's not cheap tough...
Previously I used a Boss EQ with very good results. That way you can also boost or cut certain frequencies to make your solo or rhythm sound work better
Hey BBH, which Boss pedal did you use? Why did you switch?
thanks
Just the regular GE-7...
I got the Baggs for Christmas and I found I was able to turn up much louder before getting feedback. The tone and EQ are better too and I like that you can adjust the level of boost you want.
Still the Boss worked pretty good. Most of the time I liked setting my regular sound for rhythm with mids way down and boosting volume and bringing back the midrange for leads with the pedal.
It also worked the other way around, engaging the pedal for rhythm with lower volume and the appropriate EQ and switching it off for leads to use the bare amp
No you can't and that is a big plus for the Boss. You can really have two completely different sounds available.
The Venue just boosts the volume for the original setting
Just to trow another one in the mix,
TC Electronic Spark Mini Booster Guitar Pedal, I don't use these but this one gets almost unanimously positive reviews: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E58SW3U/
Thanks for all the great recommendations! As I said, the Baggs's boost sounds very electric through my bandmate's guitars, all of which have Bigtones. My bass player actually has the bass model of the Boss pedal. I reckon if I use it flat, it'll work fine. Plus since he doesn't use it, I can get it for next to nothing!
Don't get me wrong, I love my Baggs Para, but with Fishman amp, I don't need a preamp.
@BluesBop Harry it isn't that I want two different sounds, his boost just turns it into an electric guitar solo. If you could eq the boost, that could be fixed.
We're on frustrating quest for a perfect sound.

The best, though (cleanest), is the Red Eye preamp with a built in adjustable boost.
