    Hi all,
here are some pdfs I had . . as promised. They are for a specific band, so please-someone proof them, or enter them into finale (mostly they are short) and edit them.
    Cheers,
    B.

A few months ago I compiled a list of standards found on a couple of the JSP box sets and then looked in my Real Books to see what was there. Here are my results.

BTW, I may have missed a few here and there ... this list is in no way definitive or final! Hope it can help in some way. Numbers next to the tune represent the page number in that Real Book ... so "All of Me" appears in RB vol 1, page 20.

I took a day off and come back to this!!! How great. It sounds like there are a lot of people that can help make this project work! Very exciting.

How wide would you like to extend the variety of tunes you want put in this book ? Django only ? Or do you plan on more ? I think more would be good since the Complete Django has already done such a great job with 81 tunes with charts and leads in normal notation and tab.
What's Jack is suggesting is also a great idea - mentioning the use some alternate notes / chords, it could be neat way to introduce variation by any Lafertin, Rosenberg or other Lagrene ?

How do you want to share the work ? What would I (we) need to do ?
    :

Well, I think the variety of tunes should be representative of what players are playing. Not just Django, not just old tunes. I want to keep it to strict Real Book standards. No tabs (pointless for other instruments) and no Grilles (pointless for almost everyone except GJ guitarists).

As for what variations to put in, maybe we can do that by committee. Just like when Jack corrected my chords.

As for sharing the work, we need:
Finale experts (willing to do layout, make it look nice, etc)
    Finale beginners (note input, etc)
GJ experts who know all the best changes to help proofread
GJ enthusiasts who know the best songs to add
Anyone with pdfs, gifs, scanned copies of hand written leadsheats to add to the collection. It is much easier to work off of something already written down than to have to start from scratch.

That is great! They look nice. I'll be able to put those into my template super quickly.

As someone else asked, would PDF files created in non-Finale programs be useful, or do you want exclusively Finale source files?

As I said above, any way you can get it to me is awesome.

I am also a copyist oddly with some film score background as well. Have Finale. Glad to help.

Aha! I knew there would be some finale experts around. Depending on how much effort you can put into it, you can be a huge help. Once this gets rolling, We'll try to assign work to people. You will be a main person, if you want to.

Excellent. So, now the question is, do we redo those charts as gypsy jazzers would do them, or just leave them be? My vote is on redoing them as they would be done in this style, but I am very open to ideas.

It seems like this project is a go. I take Michael's silence as him allowing us to do it, while not condoning it (for copyright reasons). I'll now make some pdfs of the other stuff that I have done and post it. Let me know changes that have to be made.

    Chris,

I concur - the changes used by GJ players are often different, and it would be useful to have charts that more nearly reflect GJ conventions.

That's a good point and one worthy of exploring. Even the Real Book charts are based on certain performances or just generally accepted changes ... there's still some dispute about RB changes among jazz players--just look at the differences between the 5th and 6th editions of the Real Book, Vol 1!

I think most of the RB changes reflect the substitutions and harmonic awareness of bebop and other styles after swing and GJ. Lots of ii-Vs, tritone subs and maj7ths in those bebop changes!

Ulitimately, I think you'd do the tunes as GJers would ... but still, which era of GJers are we talking about? I'd think that many of the current players would have a pot pourri of pre-bop and bebop changes in those, don't you think?

Would the Django Fake Book assume a common practice period of the era around WWII, say 1939-1945? Or around Django's death, 1953? Or today, during the Great GJ Resurgence, 2007?

Ok, well if no one else objects, we will put those on the list. Now we just need to find someone to make a list....

Here are 4 charts that I have done so far. One is the corrected Swing 42. All those proofreaders out there, tell me what you think. I got my changes from a book that isn't always accurate, so be brutal.

I don't know that I will have access to this page until late tonight, so I will work on the tunes that bbwood_98 uploaded. With any luck I'll be able to post those in the next couple days.

Just using the Cosimini indexes as a rough list, I've come up with a lot of tunes...obviously doing all of them would be a bit much at first, but maybe we can pare it down/add suggestions using this as a guide (I'm sure I'm overlooking a lot that's not included in Cosimini, but I'm posting from work again.)

    Hi Chris,

    A few things jump out:
1)Minor Swing: the Bm7b5 is more commonly called Dm.
2)Djangology: Cm7 should be Am7 in bar 5. D7 should be E7 in the bridge.
3)Daphne: Not sure if it's just me...I don't do the Eb to Ab to Abm turnaround on the bridge, but just repeat the Eb/Cm/Fm/Bb progression for those two bars.

Hope that helps-I'm really impressed with your idea so far!

    best,
    Jack.

    Jack,

You are the man. Ok, I'll make those changes and repost. As for that list, I love it. That will be a good beginning point. Is anyone interested in pairing that down to a top 10? Then we can work from there.

    Stackabones,
Good questions. I don't know the answers. I think we might have to take it on a song by song basis.

My big beef with the real book is they don't cover enough of the 1920s tunage. like even something like singing in the bathtub a novelty tune would be soemthgin I would choose for a Gypsy or old style set list.

People who don't own Finale can get finale Notepad for free. Version issues are the only ut oh i foresee.
