If I am missing any builders from this list, just message me and I will add. I wont add a builder to this list if they don't have some kind of reputation for making gypsy guitars. (This is not a list of retailers who sell guitars nor is it a list of factory builders.) Some of this info comes from http://www.djangostation.com/jazzmanouc ... ge=luthier .
I don't know if you're planning the list to be only active luthiers or not, but David Hodson passed away this past February. On his site, Sheila Hodson writes that she doesn't expect any more instruments to be produced there.
Well for now, I can only think about my guitar !!!
I think Louis Patenotte is the one who started it all in Mirecourt, and now his son Claude still builds some good ones. There's no website I think, but I am sure you can see some on Jacques Mazzolenni's website.
Manouche Guitars has a line of hand made guitars.

Are not all Selmer guitar copies hand made? I think the distinction that Jon is going for is small luthier vs. big shop/factory.
The distinction can be blurry. I believe that Shelly Park makes her guitars completely by herself. Maurice Dupont has many employees making guitars. I know that there were several employees at the Dell Arte shop in San Diego.
I'd bet Gitanes are as "handmade" as a Manouche. I doubt that there is enough demand for these guitars to build machines to make many of the components, as say there is for Strats and SG's.
BTW, Bernie Lehman and Lawrence Nyberg are missing from Jon's list. And then there is Draleon. Like I said, the distintion can be blurry, in more ways than one.
Hi Marc, no, Barry is right, Manouche does have a line of guitars that are absolutely luthier hand made. They have their regular production line up and the hand made line. There's a photo of one on my site and some new photos on the Manouche UK site. I'd like to talk to you sometime or get a clip of your archtop Django style... I've been moving in that direction myself. Say hello to Jack for me. Thanks,
Actually no. Clarification here.
As far as I understand it Gitanes are mass produced.
Manouche guitars are 80% handmade in small quantities.
[They are built in Korea, not China]. Manoche also offers a
totally hand made guitar that is priced accordingly.
The builder's name is Joengwoo Cho for the made-to-order
hand built guitars. Check out www.manouche-guitars.com
If you're still skeptical, you can contact the owner of Manouche guitaris, Tony Walker. His info is on the website.
