Here is the mod I did on my DG255 with a Bigtone and Humbucker...
New tuners and tailpiece also...
Refinished the top in nitrocellulose lacquer...
Sure wouldn't do this to my other guitars, however it is a work horse!
I like Josh's mod better though...
I think he has done another mod previously...
I'll use a Kent Armstrong on my next mod for sure...
I would like to see a pickup mounting ring too...
If you keep the band's stage volume at a reasonable level it works just fine, [even in close quarters-noisy bar type situations!]
I'd like to check out the Kent-Armstrong pickup at some point.
I've heard the Bigtones a lot, [and the Stimers]. Wrembel uses a bigtone and Dorado and Sampson used Stimers or Bigtones at Birdland, but they still both sound a bit unnatural to my ears.
You're right, the Schertler definitely sounds more natural then the Stimer or Bigtone. It sounds like you're playing in the kinds of situations were the Schertler shines. Less chaotic venues with decent acoustics. I've been using the DYN since 2000 and it always has done well in those situations. If you're playing through a PA or if you have the luxury of putting the Unico far away from you, then you can get really, really loud before feedback. But 2/3 of the gigs I do, we're playing a venue with terrible acoustics, lots of crowd noise, and the amps are sitting right next to us. So feedback become a huge problem....that's were the Schertler has issue. I think I just need to get some better gigs! ha ha

[quote[Cool....I noticed you have a dip switch. Does the whole thing mix to a mono jack? Did you have any phase problems?[/quote]
The Bigtone jack is through the end block and the 'bucker has a separate jack in the lower bout... I choose the SDH2SN 'cuz it is a dual pole jazz pickup, hence the switch for single or double. Very versatile.
No phase problems at all...
I took it off...it was ugly!
Yes, come to think of it, mine is really big with the mounting ring.
Josh's is so clean looking!
BTW, how did the Fishman blender work out in your Anouman???
It was on there when I bought from Alain. It was his personal guitar for years when I finally convinced him to sell it to me.
It was built back in the days when there were not many choice for pickups...
How does it sound?
I'll give you a dollar if you can do a blindfold test and tell me it isn't great compared to other pickups!
The Blender needs to be tweaked just right with around 60 / 40 from mic to pickup...
Good amp, as in my Polytone works well.
Direct worked a lot better than my Bigtone in one concert setting...
I would say you've hit the nail on the head with the DG340 and the KA as far as selling them... I don't have time to build these FrankenSelmers!
I am planning another one in the works though... However it is top secret!
I forgot to post that I also use a Fishman Model B interface that clips to my belt for volume bass and treble...
Also an old '70's MXR 10 band graphic equalizer when I play my Custom built Dell'Arte w/ a Bigtone...
The guitar is essentially a solid rosewood sides and back Hommage in the big Favino style as in the DA Rosenberg...
Pretty cool...

I'd like to hear it...I've never tried a mic/bigtone combo before. They're pretty rare, and from what I can gather usually not that successful. The mic ends up sounding too boxy and feeds back so easily that's it's barely usable. The John Jorgenson signature Dupont had this type of mic/piezo combo....but seems like John never really ended up using it much.
Stochelo has a similar system now....you can read Leo Eimers comments about it:
We where pleased with the results of this system. Well known problems with the often very sensitive internal microphones is feedback. And to be honest this microphone has this disadvantage also but to a lesser extent. Especially when used in a large setting (PA) this system is to sensitive. For smaller settings the system passed. Because of the tone controls it is possible to add the acoustic feel to piezo. Stochelo is using this system.
Interesting discussion guys. If I had this in the UK Teddy D would be berating me!
I too have been in pursuit of such a gigging guitar and like Michael have a Dupont VR that works well acoustically and is best left that way. David Hodson (RIP) built me a small bodied guitar with the same Armstrong/Bigtone combination you describe and it sounds great. This is from the concert I did hours after picking the guitar up last year:
I have experimented with an in-built Fishman blender but took it out as it ate batteries and added weight. I now just run each pickup to its own volume pot and separate output jack. Into a Headway (as per video) or an AER it sounds great.
Here in close up (with its sisters - a Hodson mandolin and tenor uke):

Do you know where to get those little volume pots that fit under the archtop bridge in the picture that you posted?
thanks
