Interesting discussion guys. If I had this in the UK Teddy D would be berating me!
Ha ha....he's probably cutting a big hole in his guitar right now..:D
David Hodson (RIP) built me a small bodied guitar with the same Armstrong/Bigtone combination you describe and it sounds great.
Sounds great Andy...it's a trip to see that humbucker hanging over the D hole like that. I never would have thought of installing one in that way. Interesting you went with a short scale...I've got so used to the ridiculously long scale of Selmer guitars that I now have a hard time playing anything "normal." But I'm trying to get over it...the long scale really helps the guitar cut when playing acoustic. But if you're just going to stick a humbucker on it, you may as well use a shorter scale. Maybe I'll do that with the next Selmerstein we build! But then you start thinking, why don't I just use an archtop? Uh oh...GAS attack coming on.
I have experimented with an in-built Fishman blender but took it out as it ate batteries and added weight.
You used the blender to combine the piezo and humbucker into one mono signal? Did it actually work OK?
And also, how are you stringing yours? I put Thomastik 12 gauge flatwounds on and it sounds super fat and balanced! The action is way lower then you'd have for acoustic playing....plays like butter.
The Hodson is a normal Selmer long scale (24 frets). It has a 7/8 size body to make it all work. It is as deep as a 335. The in-built Fishman blender worked very well blending the two sinals together via a blend pot to a mono output. As I said it added a little weight, needed a battery pouch in the guitar and used batteries at a greater rate than I expected. It may go back in as the sound it made with the Fishman buffering the pickups slightly was great.
Strings? - anything lying around. The Hodson couldn't take anything beyond an 11 set as it is delicately made (and has a non-adjustable neck). My Gitane however will work with 13s all day long if I wanted to and sounds great with a Stimer (but lousy with a Schertler!!). Gitane are being commisioned by Gremlin (the importers) to make a run of my one-off guitar next year for the UK market (without my name on it) and I will then get another and stick electrics in the worst sounding acoustically. The Gitane I have sounds too good, and loud, to mess with at the moment. You can hear it on my Myspace sound files www.myspace.com/gadjoandymac
Here is the beast:
Sorry about the double take - it is early here!
Just watching the Youtube clip made me laugh again. I remember Tim asking me before the gig to play like Bucky Pizzarelli!!. That was his favourite Grappelli period. What you got there folks was my best Bucky! There are other clips of that concert up and when we did Nuage I did all the Bucky chord subs #9s and all - Teddy D probably hates all that too.
Is this a good example of what a Bigtone sounds like???with an AER??
Is he playing the DG-340??
Amazing player!!! Follow the link and check out the rest of clip form that gig
Does anybody have any idea what kind of pickup/amp is Stephane Wrembel using in that clip???...I'd really like to know...my guess is AER/bigtone with a DG-340 but I'm not sure...

Enrique,
It is possibile that Stephane was playing acoustically in that clip. He does use an AER amp and either a bigtone or a Stimer when he needs to amplify, but he has an incredible right hand technique and I have seen him go pure acoustic at a fairly big (220 seat) venue.

Probably...but Marc could be right too. Maybe it's acoustic....it's so hard to tell from crappy, super compressed audio. Believe me, what you're hearing on the video is at best a rough estimation of what it really sounded like.
It seems that with the percussion eating highs and the bass booming over, he would need a little help to sound so articulate but then again the camera was probably pretty close...
Maybe someone of the forum was there when it happened???
At almost every gig I've seen Stephane play he was using the bigtone/AER combination-only the last one, where he was moving toward a much more 'electric' sound was different...there he was running a Stimer/AER setup with some pedals.
