it seems to me he's alternating all the fast scales.
He might be... it's too fast to tell for sure without slowing down and having a second look, and he uses a lot of legato. However it really looks like he's doing rest strokes and that combined with even notes/strokes per string patterns would make it gypsy picking. Gypsy picking includes alternate... and I don't think he's picking upstrokes on string changes...
My congrats on such a cool project, and GREAT production...can you talk about Mic(s) and placement in the studio?
that recording is just phenomenal , those lads are smokin'...great website also.
And thanks for the download option...I hope that catches on.

Basic setup was :
- Rythm section (2 guitars + double bass) in the big tracking room
- Solo player in the smaller tracking room with eye contact through window.
For the duets or for Rocky's solo tune they were all in the same room with the double bass player (as seen in the "What a wonderful World" video).
For the rythm section, mainly two AKG C414 as a spaced couple pair (80% of the rythm section sound), with Neumann KM184 for the guitarists as reinforcement mics and Beyer M88n for the double bass (20% of the rythm section sound).
Selmer guitar was miced with a Neumann U87 and a Beyer M88n.
All that through Avalon, Neve, Drawmer & Focusrite preamp & comp.
holy SNAP!
i can't even express how excited I am for this project. i never make the time to post, but it's worth it to say that it's looking like
THIS WILL EASILY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT GYPSY JAZZ ALBUM FOR YEARS TO COME.
and if you think that's an exaggeration, well then i don't believe it's by much...
adrien is my favorite badass!
sebastien is a freakin' GENIUS!
and ROCKY OWNS ALL like Bill Gates!
They are so totally the real deal. If there is an 'edge' to jazz manouche, they're on it.
wooooooooo! I'm about to pass out... for reallyotho, what a great project... ah, the French! The French have their own scene and it's just wonderful. People often criticize them for being uninviting, but you can really see the comraderie here. Just a handful of talented musicians trying to make it in the world. What am i saying 'try...' they are! These guys really listen and play so creatively.
Cheers!
Thanks for posting this terrific material. I saw Rocky jamming this past year at Samois and was - once again - amazed at the talent of a player that even Django fanatics in the States have never heard of.
Bob Holo mentioned a few posts back that two of the musicians featured on the CD will be in the States this summer, Adrien Moignard and Mathieu Chatelain, both with Ensemble Zaiti. If all goes as planned they will be at Djangofest SF (as well as making, I'm sure, other west coast appearances) and then spend the better part of a week with us in Northampton MA at Django in June.
So here's my pitch for Django Camp at Django in June: You can certainly make the trip to Samois and hang on the outside edge of the circle watching the heavy-hitters jam at Mathieu's tent. Or, for less than the cost of airfare, you can come to Dajngo Camp and actually sit in with them for the better part of a week. Here, it's actually their job and their intent to share what they know with us. I hope you'll take them up on the offer.
At no additional charge, we'll throw in Robin Nolan, Mr. Gypsy Picking Himself Michael Horowitz, Gonazalo Bergara, Jean Philippe Watremaz and a whole heap of other really, really talented musicians.
End of pitch. Cheers to all,
Andrew

Maybe I'm blind but it seems to me he's alternating all the fast scales. Anyway, who gives a damn. He's brilliant as I said!

just to let you know that there is a new video on the website :
"Viper's Dream" by Sébastien Giniaux
or should I say :
Sébastien Giniaux's "Viper's Dream"
(as it will be known by now...)
in my opinion (biased of course), a masterpiece, and the solo featured on this video is only half of it.
It can be seen here : www.selmer607.com/eng/
In the "Bonus / Video" section.
