RA is well worth it, even if you avidly transcribe. Christian does a great job at filming songs, parsing the songs out into "lessons," notating pick direction, and making notes as to some key licks that should be learned and played in other keys. While I'm not a current member (focusing on working with my current teacher), I often return to the academy periodically.

Another nod for Christiaan's site. I'm focusing on rhythm (and doing another of Christiaan's excellent projects, the Nou'sche course), else I'd be on RA still. I got a ton out of my 3 mos. membership, and expect I'll be coming back as well.

Well, my first day at RA. Worked through exercise 2 and hope I have enough energy tonight after rehearsal to go through Dinette.

A real biggie for me. I had been focussing on my downstrokes at speed and was trying to correct what I thought a fault in that Other than working up the strings and a lone on one string I wasn't playing rest strokes.

Turns out Stochelo doesn't play rest strokes on all downstrokes.

He does however play lead with 3 fingers mostly and I learned to play with 4 and am not even going to try and change that so the fingerings are not a big help. I am so glad Christiaan did notation too as I completely suck at tab.

Gypsy picking in the Dutch school is quite different from what is generally taught in various sources. I sometimes give private lessons (also though skype) or demonstrations in workshops and whenever I discuss the Dutch picking system (which by now I can do in great technical detail) most players are really surprised. This system is really the key to the tone, speed, precision AND timing for the Dutch gypsy guitar players.

The TAB is really useful for the positions on the neck for the various licks so I'd say, use it for that!
