Have experimented quite a bit with picks over the last few years. For day to day use I like celluloid picks, with a rounded mando, or regular teardrop shape, played on the side. D'andrea came up with celluloid as a replacement for TS, many years ago. I think it's one of the earliest plastics and feels kind of organic. It warms up in your hand and glides smoothly, with no click. They still make their "Classic" celluloid pick, but I think there is a limit on the thickness at 1.25 mm. Their Pro Plecs are very similar and are 1.55 mm. I think they are a blend of celluloid and some other plastic. Grisman "Dawg" picks are the same stuff. It seems like a blend of celluloid and a similar plastic. I met Russell Malone (nice guy) and he was using D'andreas. I believe Martin Taylor uses Dawg picks. They're a nice shape and easy to hang on to. When I drop these picks on my glass top coffee table, they sound mellow and don't bounce much. Some guys think celluloid attenuates the highs too much, but I like that. The 2mm Gator Grips feel pretty good after you break them in. The textured surface seems a little rough at first, but smooths out after a while. All these picks are inexpensive and fairly easy to get. Worth carrying a few around in your Levi's coin pocket.

Nothing seems to sound or feel quite like this one... And for some reason the thickness makes the distance travelled between strings shorter! Like I said I just can't get used to those gators...

If you are using a thin pick for an alt stroke you wont have to travel as far with the pick before you pick in the alt direction ??
Sounds like a thick pick like Wegen may be just a crutch that you use on your journey to a Gator 2mm ?? ;)

So I broke out the gators again just to give them another shot. Compared ti the Wegen I think strumming chords Gypsy style with the gators gives a more dry sound. Hmm...

Now that I have my GJ guitar, I am going thru and testing all the picks again. So far it seems like the Wegen Twins (the small sizedones, 3mm) are working best. I am surprised, since I was liking the Dunlop Pure tones so much. Work in progress I guess.............

I just got a Wegen M250 mandolin pick in the mail today from Michael. Wonderful! I pick pretty hard, and damage or just shred most plastic picks (Dunlops are useless in 2 or 3 songs, sadly), so the durable Wegens are about the only ones I can use, but I always hated them for the first three months, as the point is just too pointy, and unlike the Dunlops, you can't really play with the other edges. The mandolin picks have a very rounded picking edge - much like the top edges of the dunlops - which is great for me, but also have three sides, so you can switch around as they get worn, but without being too big in the hand like many of the "large triangle" picks out there. Anyway, that's what I've got now. Might try the thinner one too. Very excited to have a no compromise solution at last!

I came across a medium Vpick and plunged down my $4. Decent gypsy pick stock, but the transparent acrylic finish isn't inspiring to me. I put a traditional bevel on the point using a file and then removed the gloss - and most of the raised text - with sandpaper. Now it has real potential. I'd like to try this with one of the bigger Vpicks.
