A couple of weeks ago I visited a guitar shop and just bought a bunch of different picks to try them out, and I cant stop praising enough this pick:
Dunlop Tortex H1 Jazz Guitar Pick

the tone it gives to my guitar its just about perfect, the only downsides are that its quite small compared to other picks and that its really sensitive on what kind of angle you are playing.

Try as I might I just cannot get into the dunlops... But I love the Wegen M350 I got. This is the pick Angelo uses I believe. Very harmonically rich tone.
  • I'm a newbie started with a Wegen (isn't that a rule?) then a couple/3 other fat things at $15 a pop or whatever and did sort of like the Guzz for a while (even after the little black ball fell off). But then I started using a Dunlop Derlin 2mm (which I'd seen mentioned on the forum) & really liked it and then one day for reasons I can't remember I grabbed a Dunlop Gator 2mm (purchased because it was the fattest pick in the big box music store I was in, if I recall) and I haven't put it down since.
Well that's not exactly true... this afternoon I was thinking the Argentines sounded dead, but sooner than usual. I was about to change strings, and then remembered there was something on this forum about Dunlops wearing. So for kicks I grabbed a new Gator out of the pack (I think the official price of a 12-pack is a nickel-ninety-eight), and the strings were yelling at me again.
Anyway, I'm liking the Dunlops. Stiff but light.
Btw whether because of the grooves/indentations/holes and other accoutrements one finds in fat picks, or just, you know, the fatness, I do find rotating between tip and side more awkward on the Dunlops than with the fatter picks.
On the flip/bright side, the pick isn't turning in my hand nearly as atrociously as it used to. I don't think that has anything to do with the pick. From what I remember of comments here about that issue, the explanation of how, why and when that happens appears to be, if not wholly beyond the scope of analysis, at least somewhat mysterious.

I bought a Dunlop Primetone 3 MM a couple of days ago, like it quite a lot, sounds almost exactly like the Wegen twin, has the grip groves, but a little pointer and 1/3 the price. Once I finally get a GJ guitar instead of the archtop I will finally be able to decide. But certainly, really liking the thicker picks, as I am trying hard to make my hand relax. I find this is easier somehow with a thick pick.

I used to use the Primetone 3MM, both round and pointed tip. Nice, but not as loud as the Wegen 3.5 MM. Tried the Gator 2 MM, but can't quite get used to them. I do love them on my Les Paul Special SL, however.

Look what showed up in the mail today :)

I got my re-fill of Bigcities and Jazz III's, and I'm trying out the Gators for the first time. It seems everybody uses these now so I have to give them a shot to see what the hype is about. Green 1.5s and black 2.0s

  • At home, I've transitioned to using the Gator 2mm almost exclusively at home, using the side. They sound good enough for rhythm and very good for leads at manageable tempos. I also bought a pack of 1.5mm picks to try out and they are a little "lighter" in terms of sound but glide through the strings easier when I get to quicker tempos (above 250bpm). I use the sides of these as well.
I still bring the Wegen GJ pick to gigs and transition between that and a Dunlop 2mm, as they give me different tonal options.

Try the smooth purple "Delrin" Dunlops too, I recommend both the 2mm and lighter 1.5mm (both shades of purple). It works well to use either thickness of the purple ones on a GJ guitar and the rougher green or black Gators on your archtop if you use flat wounds. Smooth pick for rough strings and rough pick for smooth strings. And of course use them all sideways. It takes some getting used to but it's worth it.

So far I can confirm that the Gators 1.5mm and archtops are a match made in heaven. I gain so much more precision than with the Wegen, which would get locked up in the strings or make it hard to control the dynamics so that the guitar would "shout" if I wasn't careful.

Still haven't made up my mind concerning gypsy jazz guitars though as I can't achieve the same volume and tone with the Gator 1.5mm as I can with the bigcity.

But these are first impressions just after a short session of messing around so I am going to play around with this some more and then share my opinion again as I get to know the pick better.

Oh those "gator" picks! When I first saw them mentioned somewhere someone used the name "croco". So now I have to think twice everytime I need to talk about them. Why not just rename them "dinos" from now on?

By the way, the 2 mm version is my own favourite pick so far. But I haven't had the opportunity to play with many other people, just a guitar duo. After seeing this, I will definitely try the green "dinos" again. Thanks!
