Okay, these dvds are jaw-dropping. I am still completely shocked Stochelo was kind enough to take the time and really allow multiple cameras to film his technique & style up close & personal. The quality of these dvds are professional & first rate (great sound, editing & camera work).
This is the pinnacle of gypsy jazz tutorials as these dvds expose the gypsy picking technique & rhythm playing intimately (and no less than by one of the living legends of this genre --showing us how its done!) Bravo & many many thanks to hyperhip media & Stochelo for putting together such an amazing series. I am going to go and smash my guitar now.
I'd like to jump in on the tab vs. DVD discussion and urge Denis to supply the tabs to his DVD's.
Both methods of presenting material are visual aids. Whether your watching Stochelo's fingers or looking at tab they are still both visual aids.
However, tabs are more convenient, portable and a faster way to get to phrases you want to learn. Searching through the DVD and fussing with the controls to repeat sections just slows you down.
Yes, of course, if you're just memorizing and repeating what you see then tabs are not very helpful in the long run. However, if your are analyzing the phrase in the context of the chord changes then they can be as helpful as anything.
In this regard Gonzalo Bergara's new book "How I Learned" is fabulous and a good deal at $30. Gonzalo urges you to dissect his licks, recognize the arps from which they spring and apply them in different situations. He also supplies video, but I looked at them once and moved on to his book which marries each tab to an very thorough analysis of what he has presented and how to apply it in different situations.
As to the ear training - isn't that best done using something like an MP-GT1 mp3 player? Being able to slow down songs and set loop points easily and then using your ear to transcribe solos is much quicker than using DVD - unless I guess you buy Video Surgeon or other similar software, but then you're tied to a computer.
Yes, ear training is very important - but you don't need a DVD for that.
Denis Chang is a wonderful musician and educator, and I enjoy his many free Youtube videos, but if he wants my $60, he needs to go the extra mile and include a booklet of tab or transcriptions with his DVD's.

"No good excuse for not having notation with these DVDs" or: Chang Cheaps out again!
Even the Gonzolo DVD which is a cheaply made product has individual song files along with tab.
Stick to playing and leave teaching to somebody else.

gonzalo's teaching method is great but his stuff is quite basic compared to what can be learned from the 'in the style' of series. but the bottom line is, if you don't like it then don't buy it.

Thanks for the nice comments. These projects take a long time to complete and it's easy to lose one's perspective about half way into it.
Once again many thanks for the positive review.
cheers

If it was a data disc with each section in .wmv format that would be easy.
Does anyone know how I can do that with these dvds?
PS- that also goes for 'playalongs'. Just make them .mp3s so it's easy to slow them down.
Thanks
